The Deepfake Question

There is a debate about whether or not it violates our rights of the first amendment to make laws limiting the usage of deepfakes. On one side, it can be argued that deepfakes are an aspect of freedom of expression, and therefore we should be free to create whatever we want. Often the use of deepfakes is for the purposes of parody or with no bad intent. However, on the other side, deepfakes have the potential to be very destructive if used, for example, for the purposes of making a politician (or anyone else for that matter) look like they said or did something they did not, harming their life and infringing upon their rights. It is important for us to be aware they exist and the potential consequences of using them.

Is it harmless, or dangerous?
